NEWPORT, Ky. — The WAVE Foundation, an independent nonprofit in partnership with Newport Aquarium, invites the public to paint the night blue for ocean conservation Oct. 2 at the 10th annual Nauti Nite fundraiser presented by PM/PC Direct Inc.

“Nauti Nite is one of the premier fundraisers for conservation in Greater Cincinnati,” said Scott Wingate, the WAVE Foundation’s execute director. “The funds generated during this ‘Party with the Penguins’ help the WAVE Foundation to serve as an advocate for marine life and to educate children throughout the community about the importance of conservation.”

Nauti Nite attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite blue cocktail attire as they celebrate the largest WAVE Foundation fundraiser of the year and party with Newport Aquarium’s adorable, tuxedoed African penguins.

Newport Aquarium announces All-Star roster

NEWPORT, Ky. — Thousands of baseball fans are expected to flock to Cincinnati this July for the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

This year’s Midsummer Classic will be played on July 14, 2015, at Great American Ball Park – which is the home of the Cincinnati Reds and located just a Babe Ruth home run away from Newport Aquarium across the Ohio River.BUYNOW2_ButtonAs excitement mounts for watching baseball’s best play on one field, for one game, to determine whether the American League or National League pennant winner receives home-field advantage in the World Series, a lot of discussion has sparked among Newport Aquarium staff over who is most deserving of making the All-Star teams.

Welcome to the MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati from Newport Aquarium!

This conversation inevitably led to the question, “If Newport Aquarium had an All-Star team, who would crack the starting lineup?”

After intense debate, we finally came up with a consensus. Ladies and gentlemen, your Newport Aquarium All-Stars:

NAqAll-Stars_BaseballDiamond

Pos. Name Species Scouting Report
1B Mighty Mike American Alligator The biggest and baddest alligator outside the state of Florida displays the raw power desired from a corner infielder.
2B Kevin Bacon King Penguin Chick This rookie is a natural diver, which is great for fielding groundballs up the middle.
SS Cal Sand Tiger Shark When you’re named after Cal Ripken Jr., it’s practically assumed that you play shortstop.
3B Paula African Penguin Aside from being a great base runner (as evidenced by the video above), this South Africa native feels right at home at the hot corner.
C Denver Loggerhead Sea Turtle His shell provides natural padding for blocking wild pitches from behind home plate.
P Pork Chop Asian-Small Clawed Otter This “southpaw” was one of the few animals at Newport Aquarium with the arm to pitch.
LF Sweet Pea Shark Ray Sweet Pea has a knack for finding the “Sweet Spot” of the bat.
CF Hercules Arapaima Fish His ability to jump out of the water to catch prey translates well to center field, where he can rob potential home run balls.
RF Greg Sandbar Shark Named after power-hitting outfielder Greg Vaughn, who played for the Reds in 1999, Newport Aquarium’s first year.

The team would be managed by Thunder, a more than 100-year-old alligator snapping turtle and Newport Aquarium’s oldest resident, who has the experience to lead this group to victory.

Longtime Annual Passholder Surprised with VIP Bravo Experience

NEWPORT, Ky. – A longtime Newport Aquarium Annual Passholder was surprised Wednesday afternoon with an exclusive meet-and-greet with Bravo the Galapagos tortoise.

Michelle Ridder, an Annual Passholder since 2009, arrived at Newport Aquarium around 2 p.m. Upon her arrival, aquarium staff informed Ridder, who has a physical condition that requires her to be wheelchair bound, that special arrangements were made for her to go behind the scenes of the Turtle Canyon exhibit to get up and close with Bravo, who at 650 pounds is the largest turtle in the Midwest.

Visiting the aquarium 3-4 times per week on average throughout the years, Ridder earned the nickname “Penguin Michelle” for her frequency of backstage Penguin Encounter purchases.

However, once Turtle Canyon opened in March 2014, Ridder developed a fondness for Bravo.

The downtown Cincinnati resident missed the opportunity to purchase the Bravo VIP Experience, which was available for during the 2014 summer.

When Newport Aquarium announced Turtle Canyon was closing March 1, Ridder made a priority to visit Bravo as possible.

Aquarium staff took notice of her interest in the massive tortoise and decided to give her a once-in-a-lifetime experience to thank her for her dedication and loyalty to Newport Aquarium.

I Heart Turtles Facebook Sweepstakes
Other guests can receive this exclusive encounter with Bravo through Newport Aquarium’s “I Heart Turtles Facebook Sweepstakes,” where one lucky guest and four of their friends will win an exclusive VIP Bravo Experience. The Facebook contest, which runs through Feb. 17, includes a prize package of five general admission tickets in addition to the private encounter with Bravo.

They grow up so fast: King penguin chicks nearing the same height as their parents

By Derek White, Newport Aquarium PR Aide

King penguin chick

NEWPORT, Ky. – From their hatchings to now, it’s hard to believe how much Newport Aquarium’s king penguin chicks, Mario and Luigi, have grown in just eight weeks and five days.

If you can spot them on any given day in the Kroger Penguin Palooza exhibit, you will notice they are nearly as tall as the adult king penguins.

You will also notice the chicks are covered in a dark brown colored fur with no signs of the species’ trademark tuxedo.

The adolescent king penguins normally suits such colors in their younger age before growing to full adult status.

If this is confusing, don’t worry because you’re not alone. In fact when king penguins we’re first discovered in the wild, explorers were confused as well and even believed them to be a different species, donning them the name, “wooly penguin.”

King penguin chick 2

Of course, upon further observation and as the penguins aged, the fur diminished and the familiar tuxedo began to appear just as they will here soon at Newport Aquarium. The quick growth is in part to how much they’re being fed, which is normal for their age.

The parents are still feeding the chicks by beak and are making sure they’re staying well fed. As of right now the king penguin chicks are just about the size of a full adult and weight approximately eight pounds each. Stay tuned as we continue to keep you updated on our newest additions to our penguin family here at Newport Aquarium.

Over 300-foot-long #SharkWall to feature aquatic marine life

SharkWallFullColor_Slide

NEWPORT, Ky. – A 35-foot-long sand tiger shark is coming to Newport Aquarium this summer.

The massive ragged-toothed shark will be the cornerstone of an aquatic-marine-life-themed mural to be displayed on the Newport Aquarium exterior wall facing the Ohio River in celebration of the aquarium’s 15-year anniversary.

SharkSection

The #SharkWall will be produced by ArtWorks as part of the Cincinnati-based nonprofit’s 2014 Public Art campaign.

“Partnering with ArtWorks for this project provides a great opportunity for local youths in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky communities to showcase their artistic talents while developing their professional and life skills,” said Newport Aquarium VP/Executive Director Eric Rose. “The SharkWall is another example of Newport Aquarium’s continuous efforts to engage the community and we believe it will spark interest in marine aquatic life and conservation.”

With heights up to 35 feet and spanning more than 300 feet in length, the #SharkWall is ArtWorks’ longest mural project in the organization’s history.

The #SharkWall was designed by professional artist and Cincinnati native Roz Tallmadge, a 2006 graduate of Walnut Hills High School and former ArtWorks artist apprentice. Tallmadge will oversee a team of 10 local student artist apprentices that will work on the mural over a 10-week span. The apprentices began preliminary work on the #SharkWall this week. The project is scheduled for completion in August.

Roz Tallmadge is the lead artist for Newport Aquarium's #SharkWall.

Roz Tallmadge is the lead artist for Newport Aquarium’s #SharkWall.

Featuring aquatic marine life from around the world – including a 25-foot-tall African penguin – the #SharkWall will bring the experience of Newport Aquarium outside the building. It will serve as a focal point for the Newport riverfront, seen by thousands each day from downtown Cincinnati, boaters on the Ohio River, visitors to Newport on the Levee, and pedestrians on the Purple People Bridge and Taylor Southgate Bridge.

PenguinSection

Upon its expected August completion date, the #SharkWall will provide unique experiences from different vantage points. From downtown Cincinnati, viewers will recognize some of Newport Aquarium’s most popular animals. Newport on the Levee pedestrians will have an entirely different experience – discovering hidden treasures that only close examination will reveal.

Track #SharkWall Progress: Newport Aquarium is encouraging the public to take photos and post them to social media networks using the #SharkWall hashtag throughout the summer to help track the progress of the project.

About ArtWorks: Founded in 1996, ArtWorks is an award-winning non-profit organization that employs and trains local youth and talent to create art and community impact through three strategic programming areas: Public Art, including an extensive mural program; an art therapy division, ArtRx; and an entrepreneurial arm, Creative Enterprise.
