The National Association of Town Watch (NATW), a nonprofit crime-prevention organization dedicated to the development and promotion of crime prevention in communities across the nation, originally developed the National Night Out campaign.

According to NATW, National Night Out “enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”

In 2014, 38.1 million people participated in National Night Out across the country, per NATW.
